Almost everyone who follows high school sports in the Ohio Valley made a trip to Jefferson Union and was stung by the Yellow Jackets in one sport or another. Tom Lackman’s Mr. Mat award in 1999 is just one of the memorable moments experienced by JU fans.

The Mingo Indians provided their fans with many exciting moments both on the football field and in the gym. One of the greatest things about Mingo home games was following the band from the school to the stadium.
New Athens High School is now the home of Franklin Museum, and the gymnasium hosts dinners and parties. If you peak under the banquet tables, you will find the image of the Bobcat mascot remains at center court. Dale Edwards, educator and administrator, ruled the boards here and is still one of the Ohio Valley’s all-time basketball high scorers.

From superstars on the track to state wrestling champs on the mat, Cadiz cheered on some great athletes. Football play-off appearances and a memorable undefeated season are are just of a few of things that Cardinal fans recall with pride.
One of my favorite moments in film is the beginning of the movie Hoosiers. The camera focuses on an almost-forgotten framed photograph in an empty high school gym and introduces a story of a state championship that impacted the players as well as the entire community. As schools consolidate and small towns fade, dusty pictures just like this one are put away or lost, but our memories remain. This blog is dedicated to all those great Upper Ohio Valley high schools with their teams and mascots that are not there anymore. The list is by no means complete, and that is where you come in.
